In the near future, people decided to settle Mars. At the first stage, isolated colonies were built using natural depressions to save resources and hide from ionizing radiation. After that, attempts to terraform the planet began. For many years, the research did not give the desired result and the financing of the project began to be cut. Then the decision was made: "since we cannot change the planet for people, then we will change people for the planet." Volunteers were found for this purpose, but the organizers were forbidden to conduct experiments on people. Forced to return to the old program, the researchers began to conduct more dangerous expeditions to speed up its progress. There were fewer and fewer people willing to participate in the experiments, and there were more and more various technical failures in the settlement, in which people disappeared. To clarify and stabilize the situation, a company of soldiers was sent to Mars, to which all robotic defense systems and some colonizers who had undergone external changes turned out to be hostile. However, the group was able to take control of part of the colony and discovered the results of experiments on human genetic modification using an artificially derived "VPA virus of increased adaptability". They got both the virus itself and the reagents for its control, which they began to use to fulfill their goals.
